Rockwool is the high-performance acoustic infill that professionals reach for when poly wadding isn't enough. Made from spun basalt rock, it delivers exceptional broadband absorption (NRC 0.85+ at 50 mm thickness), non-combustible fire behaviour (A1 class in most jurisdictions), and combined thermal insulation — the workhorse of studio isolation shells, industrial noise control, and fire-rated acoustic partitions across India.
The material — why rockwool is different
Rockwool boards are made by melting basalt rock at 1,500°C, spinning it into fibres, and pressing those fibres into rigid or semi-rigid boards. The result: a dense, high-melting-point, non-combustible acoustic material with performance that rivals fibreglass in absorption and beats it in fire behaviour.
In Indian construction, rockwool is the material spec'd when the acoustic target is high and the fire code is strict — studios, cinema inter-hall walls, hospital wards, and industrial machinery enclosures. It's not the cheapest material, but it's the one you order when the alternatives don't meet requirements.
Density choices — 48, 60, 80, or 100 kg/m³
48 kg/m³ is the entry-level acoustic-grade rockwool. Good absorption performance, reasonable cost, adequate for most commercial applications. NRC ~0.80 at 50 mm.
60 kg/m³ is the standard studio-build spec. Higher density = deeper mid-range absorption + better dimensional stability inside gripper frames. Recording studios and home theatres default to this density.
80 kg/m³ is the isolation-shell spec — used inside mass-air-mass wall assemblies where the rockwool's rigidity and mass both contribute to the wall's isolation performance.
100 kg/m³ is the industrial-grade spec — reserved for machinery enclosures, high-temperature applications, and cinema inter-hall walls where reference-grade absorption is required.
Fire performance — the killer feature
Rockwool is rated A1 non-combustible in most jurisdictions — the highest fire class available. It doesn't burn, doesn't melt at building-fire temperatures (500–800°C), and doesn't emit toxic combustion products. This is the reason rockwool is spec'd on projects where fire code is strict: hospitals, schools, cinemas, and multi-storey commercial buildings.

Installation — the enclosed-cavity rule
Rockwool is a fibrous material — it should be installed in enclosed cavities (inside gripper walls, inside stud partitions, inside baffle ceilings). Never install rockwool exposed to occupied space — the fibres are safe when enclosed but shed micro-fibres when disturbed.
Common installation: rockwool boards inserted into gripper-fabric frames, sealed behind the fabric skin. Or rockwool inside stud cavities with drywall closing both sides. Or rockwool inside baffle-ceiling elements with PET or fabric skin on the visible faces.
Cut with a sharp knife or fine-toothed saw. Wear a dust mask during cutting — the fibres are safe long-term when enclosed but the cutting dust is an irritant.
Rockwool vs fibreglass — the modern comparison
Both materials achieve similar acoustic performance at similar density. The differences: rockwool has higher melting point (better fire performance) and slightly better dimensional stability under humidity. Fibreglass is cheaper per kg.
For Indian projects where humidity swings are extreme and fire code is strict, rockwool is the safer specification. For projects where cost is the primary constraint and humidity/fire aren't stringent, fibreglass is the value-engineering pick. Acoustimart carries both.
Thermal insulation — a two-for-one
Rockwool is not just an acoustic material — it's a strong thermal insulator with a thermal conductivity of ~0.038 W/m·K. In building assemblies where the wall serves both acoustic and thermal duties, rockwool solves both problems with one material. This makes it particularly attractive for external walls, roof insulation, and inter-storey floor assemblies.
