Everything worth knowing before you buy.

PU Foam is the versatile core material of custom acoustic panels — the sheet you cut, shape, and hide behind fabric when off-the-shelf pyramid or wedge foam doesn't fit the room. It's used inside bass traps, ceiling clouds, and custom-shape absorbers, and is the OEM standard for acoustic components inside automotive, appliance, and industrial machinery enclosures. Acoustimart's flat-sheet PU foam is the workhorse of every serious studio-build project in India.

Flat-sheet foam — why it's the pro pick

Pyramid and wedge foams look great on studio walls, but they're not always the right shape for the job. Corner bass traps need thick blocks — pyramid foam doesn't stack. Ceiling clouds need specific dimensions — pyramid foam wastes material. Custom-shape absorbers need blank sheets to cut. This is what PU foam sheets solve.

Studio-builders across India buy PU foam sheets by the pallet, cut them on-site into corner traps, ceiling clouds, and speaker baffle panels, and wrap them in fabric. The result: room-tuned absorbers that fit the specific acoustic problem instead of generic off-the-shelf products.

Density choices — 18, 23, or higher

18-density is the entry-level acoustic-grade PU foam. Best for casual absorbers, DIY projects, and OEM applications where cost is critical. Absorption is decent but plateau's earlier than higher densities.

23-density is the studio-build standard. Better dimensional stability, marginally deeper mid-range absorption, longer service life. If you're building bass traps, use 23-density minimum — the lower densities compress under their own weight over time.

Higher densities (28–35 kg/m³) are available on bulk orders for cinema and broadcast applications where reference-grade absorption is required. Send us the acoustic target and we'll spec the density.

Thickness — 13 MM or 24 MM sheets

13 MM sheets are the thin-panel choice — layered up for bass traps (stacking 4-6 layers to get ~75 mm), or single-layer for ceiling clouds that need lightweight construction.

24 MM sheets are the fewer-layers choice for the same thickness — a 24 MM sheet stacked twice gets you the same 48 mm as four layers of 13 MM, but with fewer glue lines and less labour. Preferred by professional builders for corner bass traps.

For a standard 100 mm corner bass trap: four sheets of 24 MM PU foam, glued together, cut to a 30×30×90 cm block, wrapped in fabric with our gripper system. Four corners done per pair of sheets. This is the recipe every home theatre in India should follow.

Cutting and shaping — the on-site workflow

PU foam sheets cut cleanly with a sharp bread knife or serrated utility blade. For large volumes, an electric carving knife works remarkably well. CNC-cut sheets are available for OEM applications where precise dimensions matter — send us the DXF.

For curved shapes (barrel absorbers, cylindrical bass traps), heat-shape with a heat gun or thermal press. For laminated stacks, use spray adhesive (3M 74 or equivalent) between layers.

OEM applications — inside your product

Beyond studio builds, PU foam is the standard acoustic component inside a huge range of manufactured products. Home appliances (washing machines, air conditioners) use PU foam as motor-vibration damping. Automotive interiors use it in door cards and roof-liners for cabin acoustic control. Industrial machinery enclosures use it to reduce equipment noise emissions.

Long-term performance and UV protection

PU foam yellows and slowly degrades under direct UV exposure. Kept out of direct sunlight (which describes 99% of installations), performance holds for 8-12 years. Behind fabric — the standard installation — foam is fully protected from UV and lasts decades.

Never paint acoustic PU foam. Even a thin coat of paint seals the open cells and destroys absorption performance. If you need a coloured finish, wrap in fabric instead — this is the whole reason gripper systems exist.
