Fibre Glass Acoustic Panels are the professional-grade absorber when NRC-critical performance is required and cost is secondary. Higher density than any other common absorbent material means fibreglass delivers measurably deeper mid- and low-frequency absorption at the same thickness as PU foam or wood wool — the reason cinema screen walls, broadcast studios, and reference-grade recording rooms all use it.

Why fibreglass is the professional standard

Fibreglass has the highest airflow resistivity of any common acoustic absorber, which translates directly into more sound energy converted to heat inside the material. This is why fibreglass panels at 50 mm thickness routinely test NRC 0.95+ where PU foam at the same thickness tests 0.75.

For projects where reference-grade acoustic performance is the requirement — cinema screen walls, professional recording studios, broadcast facilities, cinema inter-hall isolation — fibreglass is the material spec'd. The cost premium is justified by the performance premium.

Density choices — 48, 64, or 96 kg/m³

48 kg/m³ is the entry-level acoustic-grade fibreglass. Better than any PU foam at equivalent thickness. Recording studios and home theatres use this density for wall panels.

64 kg/m³ is the studio-build standard. Improved dimensional stability and slightly deeper mid-range absorption. Reference for cinema, broadcast, and premium studio applications.

96 kg/m³ is the cinema screen-wall spec — the highest density available for standard installations. Best absorption performance and best dimensional stability for high-frequency-critical applications.

Where fibreglass panels go — always behind fabric

Fibreglass boards are always installed enclosed inside gripper-fabric frames or laminated behind fabric skins. Never installed exposed to occupied space — the boards are safe when enclosed, but the fibres are an irritant when the surface is disturbed.

This is why fibreglass is the invisible high-performer of studio construction. The end user sees a fabric-wrap wall; behind the fabric is a fibreglass core doing the acoustic work.

Installation — inside gripper frames

Cut fibreglass boards to fit gripper frames with a sharp knife or fine-toothed saw. Wear a dust mask during cutting; wash exposed skin after handling. Once installed inside a sealed frame, the boards are safe to be around indefinitely.

For premium installations, use 64 kg/m³ or 96 kg/m³ boards behind acoustically-transparent fabric with a 10 mm gap between the fabric and the board face. The gap improves low-frequency absorption and prevents fabric-to-board contact bruising.

Fire performance and certifications

Fibreglass is non-combustible at building-fire temperatures. Standard boards ship with fire ratings suitable for most commercial applications; Class A rated boards are available on project-scale orders for cinema, auditorium, and public assembly applications.

For projects requiring written fire certification in tender documents, batch test reports are supplied with the shipment on request.

Long-term performance and moisture resistance

Kept dry inside enclosed frames, fibreglass performance holds for the life of the enclosing structure. The material doesn't sag, degrade, or lose acoustic performance over time.

Fibreglass is moisture-sensitive — wet fibreglass loses absorption performance and can develop mould. For high-humidity applications (marine, external walls, humid basements), specify rockwool instead. For standard indoor commercial applications, moisture isn't a concern.

Installation guide

  1. Confirm wall / ceiling substrate is clean, dry, and dust-free
  2. Mark installation zones per the acoustic layout plan
  3. Fix panels using the specified adhesive, mechanical fixings, or Acoustimart uPVC gripper system
  4. Maintain the recommended gap between panels for uniform absorption
  5. Do a walk-through with the Acoustimart engineer for final acceptance

Care & maintenance

  • Dust panels every 2–3 months with a soft brush or low-suction vacuum
  • Spot-clean stains with a dry microfiber cloth — avoid water on foam / PET
  • Do not paint absorptive surfaces (blocks porous absorption)
  • Inspect fixings annually and re-tension gripper fabric if needed
