Baffle ceilings are vertical acoustic elements suspended below a hard ceiling. Because they expose absorbent material on both faces, baffles deliver more absorption per square metre of floor than a flat ceiling panel — the go-to for open floors with exposed slabs, exposed HVAC, or double-height volumes. Baffle Ceilings are the acoustic answer to the exposed-slab and double-height-volume design trends. Instead of covering the full ceiling with panels, baffles hang vertically below the ceiling — exposing both faces to the acoustic environment and delivering higher absorption per square metre of floor than any flat panel system. For offices with exposed HVAC, restaurants with industrial aesthetic, and warehouses with high ceilings, baffles are often the only practical acoustic solution.

Why baffles absorb more than flat panels

A flat ceiling panel absorbs sound on its bottom face. A vertical baffle exposes both faces to the acoustic environment, effectively doubling the absorption per unit of installed material. In practical terms: 30 sq metres of baffles delivers the acoustic performance of 50–55 sq metres of flat ceiling panels.

This ratio is why baffles win on projects where ceiling height is variable, floor area is large, or the ceiling itself is a design feature (exposed slab, industrial ductwork, timber beams) that the client wants to preserve.

Offices with exposed-slab ceilings and industrial aesthetic. The baffles preserve the visible ceiling while delivering the acoustic treatment. Typical spec: PET or rockwool-core baffles at 30–50% floor-area coverage.

Restaurants and cafés with industrial-look interiors. Baffles pair well with exposed brick, concrete, and metal — the acoustic treatment becomes part of the design rather than something hidden.

Warehouses, workshops, and industrial spaces with high ceilings. Full-ceiling panel coverage is impractical and expensive at 6+ metre ceiling heights; baffles at 30% floor coverage deliver the acoustic control at a fraction of the material cost.

Double-height atriums, lobbies, and reception areas where the ceiling volume is architectural and needs to be preserved.

Core options — PET, rockwool, or fibreglass

PET-core baffles are the design-friendly choice. Colour flexibility, low-VOC, wipe-clean surfaces. Standard for offices, hospitality, and public spaces.

Rockwool-core baffles deliver deeper acoustic performance and higher fire rating. Standard for cinemas, industrial spaces, and applications requiring non-combustible ratings.

Fibreglass-core baffles are the reference-grade acoustic choice. Deepest absorption per unit thickness; reserved for broadcast, cinema, and studio applications where reference NRC is required.

Suspension and installation

Baffles hang from wire droppers attached to the structural ceiling or roof joists. Standard suspension uses 3-4 wire drops per 1200×600 mm baffle, giving individual baffle stability and adjustability during install.

For grid-style installations (baffles at regular intervals across a floor plate), a T-grid or track system provides consistent spacing and cleaner install lines. Acoustimart carries the tracks and drops for both approaches.

Baffles can be installed at any orientation — parallel to walls, at 45° for design feature, or in curved layouts for lobbies and atriums. The suspension system handles any angle.

Sizing and layout for common projects

Office open floor with exposed slab (1000 sq ft, 3.5m ceiling): 40 baffles of 1200×600 mm covering ~30% of floor area. This delivers RT60 in the 0.6–0.8 s range that meets modern office standards.

Restaurant with industrial aesthetic (500 sq ft dining, exposed structural ceiling): 20-25 baffles at 45° pattern above the dining area. Achieves acoustic comfort while preserving the aesthetic.

Warehouse (5000 sq ft floor, 8m ceiling): 100-150 baffles at grid pattern. Practical acoustic treatment for a space where full ceiling coverage would be prohibitively expensive.

Design and colour flexibility

PET-core baffles come in the standard PET colour range plus custom colours on project-scale orders. Mix colours to create visual rhythm across the ceiling grid.

Straight, wavy-profile, or CNC-cut custom baffle shapes are available. For premium installations, baffle profiles can be shaped to complement the architectural language of the space.

For visible-from-below installations, both faces of the baffle carry the finish colour. For side-visible installations, edge finishing is available.

  • Dust panels every 2–3 months with a soft brush or low-suction vacuum
  • Spot-clean stains with a dry microfiber cloth — avoid water on foam / PET
  • Do not paint absorptive surfaces (blocks porous absorption)
  • Inspect fixings annually and re-tension gripper fabric if needed
